Women in Early Film
Because middle-class women controlled the domestic sphere and spent the family’s (disposable) income on consumer goods, as well as directing leisure activity, they were viewed as arbiters of taste for the middle-class family.
Males being the Superheroes!
" Men are seen as the protectors, the saviors, the breadwinners, and the know-alls. Women are constantly being misrepresented in these films, shown for purposes of objectification, support of the male characters, and mostly as love interests that drive the male characters. In the few movies where we see strong lead female characters, we also see them having the support of at least one male who is involved in their situation in some way where the female ends up needing their help. We very rarely see any breaks in stereotypical gender roles. "

Normalizing Male Dominance
In, The Wolf Of Wall Street, it is more about male dominance. This movie is a perfect example of what it society puts into our heads. That the man of the house is to be making all the money, cheating on the wife and doing whatever he wants without being questioned. While he has his hot housewife who is at home, maintaining the house, keeping her figure and caring for the kids. Our society forces us to think that life like this is normal. That the women can't be able to "the man of the house" and that the father can be a stay home dad.
Women Dominance in Present Films
Lately, present films have been starring a female dominance lead. Most of the them come from female authors who are very head strong and know what they want. For example, Divergent and The Hunger Games. Both had female leads who lead a war to freedom. The similarities in the two have a lover who they try to protect or to keep them sane. But still make most of the decisions. The authors really wanted a strong female lead but still intertwined romance just like society expects it to.
Gender Roles in Disney Films
We all can admit that we wanted to be a Disney Princess growing up. I always wanted to be Ariel, because I was so fascinated with how she can turn into a mermaid. Or Belle because she was so beautiful. What we didn't know is that these Disney Princess' were setting us up in gender roles.
Society today, there is so much pressure to have a certain "beauty". We are inundated with all types of media telling us who to be and what to look like. It starts off when you're young because it is easier to process things and seem it's okay. Being a Princess means you have to wait around until a Prince comes to the rescue.
Why does it seem that Princess' have to be helpless and need a man to save them? It's absurd. Women should be seen as strong figures to the younger generation. Although one of the newest Princess' from Brave, Marida - is the first to actually be the only one who can do things on her own. She proves a point to her father that she can do things better than someone that is suited to marry her.
Here is an article about how a women feels about her daughter being called a Princess everywhere and why she can't be something else.
Gender Roles - In the Media
Reading this article really proves a point on how women and men are viewed in movies. The article brings up a good point though because it is society who sets the expectation of how gender roles should be played. It's sad to say that even for our generation z - they will get pushed with gender roles through advertisements.
It seems that women are to be spoiled, beautiful and be a sexy role model for the hard-working men. Or the typical hot next door neighbor who has the the blonde hair, good looks but has no brain.
It is sad that when we watch TV or go to the movies that things like this doesn't matter. That to us it is actually normal. We can't see it as gender roles because as a society it is expected.
